Top 10 things On in Brisbane this week 20/01/2019

Look towards the stars, Brisbane. Because the floor is infested with cockroaches.

20th January

What: It’s a LOL SURPRISE PARTY! With lots of LOL themed activities to keep your Little LOL doll fan busy! Make a LOL Door Hanger to hang in your room! Create your own LOL jewellery to wear! Have your toe nails painted with sparkly glam glitter polish! Sparkly makeup and glitter applied! You will also be playing LOL inspired games! Drinks and Ice Cream Sundae Buffet included!

Why: If you hadn’t yet noticed, this is a kid’s event. So, if your kid owns one of those horrifying dolls…well…you really should’ve thought things through when you ‘forgot’ to use protection.

9) Summer Series at The Creative Media Institute

23rd January

What: Are you creatively inclined and thinking about studying creative media? Come to an exclusive 3-Day workshop event in the January holidays – get behind the scenes and pursue your passion! Across the 3-day workshops, SAE Summer Series attendees will work towards building a creative piece of work to take away for use in a portfolio or showreel.

Why: For those who still have dreams of achieving their creative potential via formalised education. It’s quite funny, isn’t it? Like watching a hamster on a wheel.

8) Australia Day Cockroach Races

26th January

What: Like any great Aussie Race Day the Cockroach Races (now in year 37) provide a sporting arena and dedicated stadium seating and corporate boxes. There is a street stage with live bands performing throughout the day and who can miss the dunking machine on the street which always provides great entertainment? Come and get cocky!

Why: So. This is a real thing. Racing cockroaches. Apparently we should have been charging entry fees and attracting punters throughout university.

7) Urbane Markets Australia Day Twilight Festival

26th January

What: Come and join a massive Australia Day Celebration at Redbank Plaza! There will be steaks on the Barbie, Fizzy Drinks in the esky and only the best shopping stalls to buy from. There will be family fun activities for all coming including live entertainment, rides for the kids and animals for everyone to hold!

Why :And plenty of places to lose your family and hightail it to the airport so you never ever have to stroke a pissed-off mosquito ridden goat again. Come on. It’s not hard to outrun your grandmother.

6) Australia Day Extravaginza

26th January

What: Celebrate Aussie Day 2019 in true gin-loving style at a twilight Extravaginza! It’s food, cocktails & non-stop gin for three glorious hours with a long weekend to recover. You’ll be like a kid in a candy store. And doing your bit for your country!

Why: Ahh. Finally a form of patriotism that only involves damage to your internal organs.

5) Australia Day House Party

26th January

What: Alfred & Constance is hella excited to invite you to their first official house party for 2019! Kicking off from 2pm with Live Music on the deck, with Top 40 Aussie Countdown, a sausage sizzle in the middle, & ending with a DJ mashup in the Tiki Bar after dark!

Why: Yes. It is ‘hella’ excited. So we can only assume that this party is being hosted by some extremely well-connected preteens.

4) Daylight Lockdown: Warehouse Takeover

26th January

What: Come to a sunlit warehouse takeover in celebration of Green Beacon Brewing Co’s inaugural Daylight Lockdown. Sit back with the exclusive early-bird release of the infamous Milkshake IPA as some of Brisbane’s best street artists close down the space and transform it into an open-air gallery, breathing life into a beautiful, hidden-location.

Why: It’s like if the secret garden was infested with hipsters. But don’t worry. They’re just as sour-faced and anaemic.

3) Holy Green Festival

27th January

What: Holy Green will take place by the foreshore of Sandstone Point Hotel for a day of sun kissed skin and feel-good music. Headlining in 2019, Australian based band STICKY FINGERS will take the stage, also on the roster, New Zealand’s very own SIX60 will unleash their awesome rock pop tunes; Client Liaison and The Rubens will also rock the stage.

Why: We aren’t entirely sure why it’s called ‘Holy Green’. We accept no legal liability for promoting it.

2) Florence + The Machine 2019 Tour

23rd January

What: Florence + The Machine’s latest album – and the album upon which this latest tour is based –  is as intimate as it is epic, venturing into new sonic territory whilst reaching back to Florence’s roots. As Florence describes it, it is “is a pure expression of who I am now, as an artist, and an honest one.”

Why: Respect where respect is due. It takes a hell of a lot of honesty to characterise the pure essence of oneself as the studio cutting floor of every first year university indie band pasted together and processed in garageband.

1) Under The Southern Stars

20th January

What: Under the Southern Stars is back with a huge line up of the best of Australian rock! This year’s event will be headlined by Australia’s legendary ARIA Hall Of Fame inductees, Hoodoo Gurus. Also added to the bill will be our very own indie rockers Eskimo Joe, You Am I plus The Superjesus, British India, The Getaway Plan and Scott Darlow.

Why: You know it’s going to be a good festival when that band that caused everyone in sixth grade to bankrupt themselves on black nail polish is featured.
