What: We Can Be Heroes is an orchestral tribute to the man who fell to earth, David Bowie. Conducted by George Ellis the 24 piece Symphony Orchestra will perform the best of Bowie featuring songs from his entire songbook including Space Oddity, Starman, Under Pressure, Let’s Dance, Rebel Rebel, Heroes, Life On Mars?, Fame, Changes, Ashes To Ashes Plus More.
Why: Why listen to Bowie when you could listen to this? Which is distinctly not Bowie.

9) Seven Wonders: The Music of Fleetwood Mac Orchestrated

What: Seven Wonders is an Orchestral Tribute to Fleetwood Mac. Fleetwood Mac’s greatest hits – Dreams, The Chain, Everywhere, Tusk, Rhiannon, Landslide, Go Your Own Way, Little Lies, Big Love, Seven Wonders & More performed by a 24 piece symphony orchestra conducted by George Ellis.

8) Castlemaine Jazz Festival
11th-13th June
What: There’s much excitement for the return of the Castlemaine Jazz Festival over the Queen’s Birthday Weekend. This year’s Festival features more than twenty outstanding bands. Held across two unique central Castlemaine venues, with a full programme starting from the Friday evening and going through until Sunday evening. The Festival will be celebrating a broad range of jazz styles and performers from across the region and beyond.

7) Marooned at the Alex

What: Initially rehearsed in a living room, from its opening night in a small theatre in Prahran, Marooned has been warmly accepted.It has toured parts of regional Victoria where it has attracted standing ovations and a loyal following. Set in a waiting room in the afterlife, it focuses on the souls of four very different strangers who are bored and regretful and want to get out of this room and go home, but how? Maybe there is something they have to do. But what? Apart from the seats, the only thing in this room is each other.
Why: “It focuses on the souls of four very different strangers who are bored and regretful and want to get out of this room and go home”. The joke writes itself.

6) Cabaret on High

What: Join Steven Kramer for a night of laughs, food and cabaret on the keys. Fresh from his acclaimed season of Don’t Make Me Play Piano Man, he’ll perform the classic hits of Carole King, Elton John and Peter Allen as well as his own original songs.

5) A Flight to Japan

4) Wanna be a Rabbit?
7th June
What: Wanna be a Rabbit is the outcome of the unique chemistry between Yumi Umiumare, international ‘Butoh Cabaret’ artist and Weave, a company of disabled and non-disabled performers. Through Butoh-esque absurdity, highly visual physical theatre, text and startling installations, the work humorously reverses societal perceptions. It probes the human compulsion to categorise and judge. What are you? A wife, a worker, disabled, a refugee, black/white, an Aussie oi oi, a rabbit?

3) Poona
6th June
What: Welcome to 2050. The country is witnessing one of the tightest presidential runs in history, with one-time underdog, independent party candidate Poona Li Hung, now an unlikely frontrunner. In 1997, the controversial book, Pauline Hanson: The Truth imagined Australia in the year 2050, run by Poona, a “lesbian… of Indian and Chinese background” and… a cyborg. Roshelle Fong and Keziah Warner bring Poona to life in this necessary and timely interactive theatre work.

2) Lena Becerra: Live
12th June
What: Alejandra Lena Becerra Draghi (b. 1994) is a new media artist from La Plata, Argentina. She studied visual arts and printmaking at the University of La Plata and completed an artist residency in Florence, Italy. Since 2013 her work has been focused on the exploration of the sensible layers of feminism and cultural decolonisation through personal experiences of collective awareness. Experience her live.
Why: We’re not sure what “sensible layers of feminism” is, but if it’s anything like the other layers of feminism, it’ll score you a ton of credit on Instagram.

1) Quiet and Wild

Artist Yandell Walton’s piece is a sublime entry into observation, generating the feeling of weightlessness. The collective will culminate in one final Quiet experience at journeys end. Sarah Aiken of Deep Soulful Sweats unleashes our energy in a dance-off with your inner self. Prepare to be revitalised with joy and movement before boarding a vessel on the sea. Not far from shore but adrift enough to lean into stories by a medley of writers told by Tariro Mavondo, curated by Liza Boston. The collective will culminate in one final Wild experience at journeys end. You will be guided back to the shoreline for sunset.
Why: We still don’t know what the hell this is.
