10) PechaKucha x Artisan

What: Join Brisbane’s vibrant craft, design and architecture community for a night of ideas and stories in a special PechaKucha x artisan event for the Asia Pacific Architechture Festival 2021, an initiative of Architecture Media and State Library of Queensland. A range of engaging presenters will share their thoughts through a selection of 20 slides on the topic of CRAFT – exploring a considered approach to design through the lens of craft, art and architecture.
Why: Thought the human race couldn’t get any more petty and frivolous? You haven’t experienced a 90 minute slideshow about crafts.

9) Performing the Transformative
26th March
What: The project Performing the Transformative is an installation of studio outcomes completed in fulfilment of the requirements of Athene Currie’s degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The primary vehicle in the expression of this research is rites of passage as a means of transformation toward self-empowerment at menopause. Engagement with masque, masquerade, and performativity has informed this inquiry. Expressed in video and live performance, the artist’s body engages in processes of ritual in an attempt to reconnect to sense of self and actively contemplate and embody change of identity.
Why: Worried about paying rent, eventual homeless and death? Don’t be. Remember, life is full of things like this.

8) 6th Annual Archibald Prize Preview

What: Experience the 6th Annual Archibald Prize Preview featuring the 2021 Archibald, Wynne & Sulman prizes entries by local SEQ artists. This annual event is held to offer an opportunity for the Brisbane and SEQ Arts Community opportunity to experience works that are otherwise never available.
Why: Proof that adding an element of competition to anything can make it exciting. And there aren’t even that many fat Brits or cakes in this one.

6) Organ Concert: Simon Nieminski
23rd March
What: Simon Niemiński has been the Assistant Director of Music at St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney since 2018. Born in London, he studied at the Royal College of Music and at Pembroke College, Cambridge as an Organ Scholar. He was an Organ Scholar of York Minster and held posts successively at both of Edinburgh’s St Mary’s Cathedrals. Experience his incredible talent live in a beautiful performance at City Hall.
Why: The second-most impressive organ fingering you’ll see this week.

5) Twilight Jazz by the River

What: Before the city warms up to Saturday evening, take some time to enjoy big band jazz after work at the Queensland Tennis Centre with music by the Jazz Music Institute’s Liam Conor & Co. Liam Conor & Co is a Brisbane based quartet with a focus on groove, rhythmic exploration and improvisation. Having recently graduated from the Jazz Music Institute, Liam has been taking the first steps to further showcasing his passion for music by constructing a refreshing list of repertoire and selecting seasoned musicians to help bring his passion to fruition. The selected repertoire largely consists of Latin and Afro cuban bangers, entwined with a few heart warming Swing classics and a touch of reggae.
Why: Remember Big Band? No? Ah! So that must mean you still have intact ear drums!

4) Rob McWilliams & Friends: Live
25th March
What: Rob was born and raised in Melbourne and played professionally on the scene there in the late ’70’s and throughout the ’80’s including stints with fusion band McDonald’s Farm and mainstream jazz group Wilbur Wilde’s Blowout. Experience an ensemble put together to perform standards and some of Rob’s original compositions spanning the last few decades.
Why: There’s no reason why the desperate struggle to stave off death can’t be jazzy.
3) Run Rabbit: Live

What: Join Run Rabbit as they launch their debut album titled ‘Short Changed’ packed with fresh, divergent and distinct arrangements full of interplay and invention. A unique and exciting offering to the Australian Gypsy Jazz scene.

2) Ginfused Festival

What: If you’re Brisbane’s biggest gin-thusiast, or you just simply love a good old fashioned G&T, you’re invited to revel in this glorious spirit! The Ginfused Festival will be a collaboration featuring some of Australia’s finest distilleries, joining forces to celebrate all things botanical. This full day festival will be an amazing fun-filled day with artisan gin, masterclass sessions, charcuterie boards and live music!
Why: It’s not a diagnosable mental disorder if it has the word ‘artisan’ in it.

1) MOULD: A Cheese Festival
26th-28th March
What: MOULD celebrates the crumbly cheddar, gooey camembert and bitey blue by the best artisan producers from across the country. There is a great range of hand picked wine, beer, cider, sake and nibbles for you to enjoy between cheese tastes and to take home.
Why: You successfully avoided the complications of COVID, but that doesn’t mean you can’t cultivate other health problems!
