10) Older: Single Launch

What: Join Western Sydney artist Gemma Navarrete, featuring support from Brewer, for the launch of her debut single OLDER. Gemma Navarrete is a Western Sydney based musician who creates RnB/pop infused music with concise, poetic lyrics that depict the clunky transition from adolescent to adult.
Why: Because there’s nothing more fun than revisiting a time in which you were even less sure of yourself than you are now, in the form of a nineteen year old lamenting her lost youth.

9) Splash at The Port

8) Beach Bar: Carnival Edition

What: This year it’s time to channel the spirit of the world’s greatest show, ‘Trinidad Carnival’. Now in its 6th year, experience Australia’s first and only Caribbean beachside event, celebrating Soca and Caribbean music. Party into the sun set in Sydney’s own Carnival haven. Wear your Carnival costume, aka ‘Pretty Mas’, get down to the sounds of DJ Naiki and DJ Fasmwa and dance and get on like you would in Carnival!
Why: You heard them. “Get on like you would in Carnival”! So, masks on eyes only, no visible space between your sweaty body and everyone else’s and consume whatever substance is shoved in your face.

7) Wraith ‘Broodmother’ Release Show
20th February
What: After months of no live shows, The Burdekin is beyond excited to get back to proper live gigs, and there’s no better way to do this than with Sydney’s evil-as-shit riffy deathcore act, Wraith. Experience the carnage live.
Why: Has a long lockdown caused you develop severe depression? Instead of blowing out your brains, try blowing out your eardrums. It may not ultimately solve the problem, but it sure will suppress it for a few more hours.
6) Lano and Woodley: Live
14th-20th February
What: As well as a bunch of new bits, Col and Frank will draw from the massive repertoire of pointless stupidity that has made millions of people bliss out on belly laughs. AND ISN’T THAT WHAT WE ALL NEED? One thing is guaranteed, Col will nobly take to the stage, ONLY to be shitted up the wall by Frank for your entertainment.
Why: Hopefully, an indication Colin Lane has finally stopped trying to be anything on his own.

5) Young Henry’s Live Lounge feat. The Jam Sandwiches & Telopia
19th February
What: Young Henry’s and Kelly’s on King present The Jam Sandwiches & Telopia! The Jam Sandwiches are an up and coming Redfern based rock band, specialising in hard rock, psychedelia and progressive music. All four members draw from varying influences to create unique, well…jams! Brewed in Sydney, Telopia are a four-piece that formed in early 2019. Drawing from the raw energy of early Arctic Monkeys records, all the way to the sparkling anthems of The War On Drugs, Telopia’s sound is immediate and expansive, but they aren’t afraid to roll it back and build more psyched, spacey atmospheres.
Why: An indie-pop afternoon tea. Inoffensive, unsurprising, digestible.
4) The Rubens: Live in Life
20th February
What: The past year has seen The Rubens travel to North America, UK & Europe for headline tours, perform and release their MTV Unplugged Live In Melbourne album, slay the main stage unveiling their collaboration with punk hip-hop star Vic Mensa at Splendour In The Grass AND between all of that, bunker down to write and focus on new music. Don’t miss your chance to see Aussie alt-rockers, The Rubens, live in 2021!
Why: The most non-threatening alt-rock band since that other one that no one remembers.
3) Sydney Lunar Festival
14th-21st February
What: Sydney’s Lunar Festival, marking the arrival of the Lunar New Year, will once again take over Haymarket, Circular Quay and the CBD! The City of Sydney will erect its suite of spectacular giant Lunar Lanterns that have been commissioned to various artists and represent the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. More than 80 associated events are included in the festival this year including community celebrations, concerts, exhibitions, theatrical performances, special restaurant menus, talks, workshops and tours. You’ll be able to see demonstrations of Cantonese opera, folk dance, calligraphy, tea ceremonies, painting and more.
Why: Restrictions have just been eased. Time to huddle together in a big sweaty mass and pass around speciality meats!

2) Sunset Piazza

What: If you had any doubts that live music and comedy are back, big time, then you need to check out Sydney’s brand new pop-up outdoor venue and concert series in the heart of the city. The Sunset Piazza is in Cathedral Square, opposite Hyde Park, bringing with it 32 nights of music and comedy under the watch of the beautiful St Mary’s Cathedral. Sunset Piazza offers the kind of night out in the city you’ve been craving. Visit a local restaurant before the show or grab a bite to eat from on-site artisan providores serving panini and antipasti. Enjoy a pre-show drink from the bar, and settle in for a selection of Sydney’s best DJs, pre-show. Some astonishing talent will be playing, across the full spectrum of genres: think Ben Lee, Alex the Astronaut, the Umbilical Brothers, Opera Australia, Lawrence Mooney, Lizzy Hoo, and JK-47. Sydney’s favourite jazz vocalist Emma Pask; classical music mavericks Ensemble Offspring; and purveyors of queer parties and good times, Heaps Gay also join the program.
Why: Get pissed, eat paninis and watch Heaps Gay in front of a church. We’re often hard on Sydney but sometimes it just pulls it off.

This year, take your seats for a spectacular celebration of pride, protest, passion and diversity. This is Mardi Gras like you’ve never seen it before, in one of Sydney’s most iconic venues! It’s game on for the 43rd Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade as the Sydney Cricket Ground is being transformed into a stunning and sparkling showcase of LGBTQI+ culture and community.
Why: Mardi Gras at the SCG. We’d never have thought in the era of COVID we’d have to cause to say, ‘it’s a magical time to be alive’.
