10) National Memorial Day Concert

25th May

What: The annual National Memorial Day Concert that traditionally airs from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol will be switching to a virtual event. Hosted by Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise, the PBS concert will feature new performances and tributes filmed around the country to honour the military as well as heroes on the frontline of the pandemic crisis. Among those appearing will be Gen. Colin Powell, Cynthia Erivo, Renee Fleming, Trace Adkins, CeCe Winans, Kelli O’Hara, Mary McCormack, the National Symphony Orchestra, Christopher Jackson, Sam Elliott, Laurence Fishburne and Esai Morales.

Why: A reminder that there are still delicately braised pieces of chicken, fragrant stalks of thyme and a soupçon of white wine in the sh*t soup that is the USA.

9) Billy Moran’s Afternoon Lunch Special

25th May

What: Composer, songwriter, and lead guitarist for the indie rock group Louden Swain, Billy Moran, will be playing some covers, some originals and interacting with his fans in an intimate livestreamed mini-concert.

Why: He’s alright.

8) One Earth Live

24th & 25th May

What: John Butler, Michael Franti, Nahko, Trevor Hall, FINK, Rising Appalachia and more will headline One Earth Live, a two-day transformational online festival that promotes positivity and explores the solutions and pathways for a brighter future ahead. The international lineup includes other notable musicians, artists, motivational speakers, Indigenous elders, wellness experts, yoga instructors, youth activists and poets.

Why: It’s a comfort to know that white guys with dreadlocks pushing yoga is still considered ‘transformational’. Not everything is in flux.

7) Movement at Home

24th-26th May

What: Movement Detroit will be hosting a virtual live-streamed festival called Movement At Home. In place of the “real-life” festival, they have put together a stacked line-up of DJs to play a live broadcast event. Among the DJs locked to play the live-streamed festival are Carl Craig, Loco Dice, ANNA, Seth Troxler, Kevin Saunderson b2b Dantiez and Wajeed.

Why: If you crank this festival up to max volume, you deserve to experience the repercussions via your quiet neighbour who keeps to himself.

6) Virtual APRA Music Awards

25th May

What: The Virtual APRA Music Awards look to recognise those artists that have been noted as performing well in the last year, but peer-voted awards recognise the cream of the Australian song-writing crop. This Monday will see a gala night, online, hosted by Briggs and awarding those artists that have created something special in the last twelve months. The inaugural Virtual APRA Music Awards will feature performances from the likes of John Butler and Mama Kin, Kira Puru and Mo’Ju, Nikka Costa and Justin Stanley, The Dawn of MAY, and William Crighton.

Why: A galling reminder that this is still 2020 in other ways and that the John Butler Trio is still considered representative of the best of us.

5) Gretsch presents Georgia On My Mind

What: The seventh annual Georgia On My Mind concert, benefiting the Georgia Music Foundation, will be broadcast to a global audience, hosted by the Indigo Girls’ Amy Ray and singer/songwriter Brent Cobb. What: The eclectic, creatively restless American alt rock band from Houston, Texas, Blue October, will be hosting a live at-home performance of their albums ‘The Answers’ and ‘Consent To Treatment’.

Why: A singular point in time in this volatile era in which right wing and left wing Texans are wailing in unison about consenting to treatment.

What: Join GRAMMY-nominated singer-songwriter Sophie B. Hawkins for an acoustic solo set. Hawkins is known for her critical and commercial success and a string of single hits including “Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover”, “Right Beside You”, and “As I Lay Me Down”.

Why: Unlike a large portion of the populous in 2020, the 90s will never die.

What: Adam Lambert, Jordin Sparks, Kelly Osbourne and more are set to participate in Stronger Than You Think, a three-day livestream event which will address teen mental wellness. What: The Dropkick Murphys are performing from an empty Fenway Park, with pal Bruce Springsteen joining them remotely. The band and The Boss will be doing a double play — two songs — one from each musical act. The livestream will be available on the Dropkick Murphy’s Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Twitch page.

Why: The songs are no ‘Sweet Caroline’. What a f***ing relief.
