You’re Depressed, Therefore You Are with Royal Albert Home: David Ford

Emotional connections have never seemed more like a desperate farce.

The mass realisation of our own mortality coupled with the mass realisation that, yes, disproportionate wealth will always save the elite, and that no crisis, no matter how fatal, will be a great leveller, has resulted in a collective reach towards syrupy emotion to reaffirm the fact that we exist beyond the level of meat puppet.

At the bottom of the barrel of sanity, there remains a comfort in the fact that we are not otherwise unaffected by death. Being dually melancholic over the state of existence and sentimental about the other living things in your proximity is one of the greatest confirmations of existence to which we have access.

And there’s no better medium through which to express the two pathetic facets of human character to which we’ve all been reduced than impassioned indie folk music.

Yes, in these strange times, closing the Albert Hall’s doors is the best way to look after the world, but they are opening a (virtual) window for you to experience some of the most talented artists around. David Ford is often praised for his lyrical dexterity and willingness to tackle matters of politics and current affairs, Rolling Stone commended his “Genuine depth and striking authority”, while The Telegraph described his work as “Smart, angry, witty, emotional songs, delivered with raw-throated passion.”

His debut album, ‘I Sincerely Apologise for All the Trouble I’ve Caused’, was included in both The Times and Word Magazine’s top ten albums of the year. Ford has been documenting the unfolding story of COVID-19 in song, releasing new songs throughout the crisis; and the Royal Albert Hall are delighted to bring his music from his home to yours as part of the Royal Albert Home series.

Sure, it’s as desperate a farce as any other fear-based display of naked sentiment you’ll come to regret experiencing.

But unlike most of the other ones in this year’s scramble for sanity, this one’s got a piano accordion.
