What: Making Meaning: Collections as Data is a one-day symposium featuring influential and challenging speakers from the research, government, digital humanities and GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) sectors. Making Meaning aims to raise awareness of the potential of collections as data and build a community of practice in Australia. The symposium is an outcome from our commitment to digital collecting, engagement and empowerment in the State Library of Queensland Digital Strategy.

8) Hidden Valley

What: Hidden Valley is back for its first instalment of 2020! This is a special event with 100% of proceeds going towards victims of the current Bush Fires across Australia. Experience a night like no other fuelled by a lineup of deep and dreamy progressive psytrance DJs.
Why: Psytrance and watered down club liquor for a good cause. Proof that the proverb “two wrongs don’t make a right” is irrelevant to the 21st Century EDM bro. Not that we needed more proof.

7) Talisker Whisky Dinner
3rd March
What: Start 2020 with a big bang. Talisker is one of the most interesting whiskies out there with a lot of different variations, and it’s a perfect liquid accompaniment to an experimental menu of gourmet food. The night is going to be hosted by Diageo’s Queensland Brand Ambassador Tim Glasson resident Chef Evan White. The whiskies that are going to be offered on the night are: Talisker 10 years, Talisker Storm, Talisker Port Ruige, Talisker Distillers Edition and Talisker Niest Post.
Why: There’ll be ten whiskies. Even if Tim and Evan end up living through the night with their ability to speak unmolested, it’ll still be a good time.

What: ‘Self aware, but not indulgent’ is how Californian sad punks Mom Jeans describe their sound; trading sappy for heartfelt, and the melodrama for truth, to create a sound important to our era. The four piece have been announced as part of the huge Farmer & Owl Festival in 2020 alongside Press Club, Uncle Acid & The Dead Beats, & Hot Chip, they’ve announced their Australian headlining tour.
Why: If you’ve not bought a ticket to these guys, you might as well turn in your beard clippers and start drinking generic off-the-shelf beer. You aren’t welcome in the club anymore.

1) Brisbane Comedy Festival
1st-22nd March
What: Australia’s fastest growing comedy festival, Brisbane Comedy Festival has grown into a multi-venue extravaganza, bursting at the seams to host a hand-picked selection of the funniest folk in the country. It’s year 11 for the Brisbane Comedy Festival, featuring a bumper line-up of 85 acts playing in 14 performance spaces across 5 venues. The month-long fun and frivolity begins with the Opening Gala. The festival will of course shine a spotlight on top Queensland talent including Mel Buttle, Steph Tisdell, Becky Lucas and Matt Okine, local collectives Act/React, Brisburned, and Politics In The Pub as well as Agro with Jamie Dunn. National heavyweights Dave Hughes, Peter Helliar, Fiona O’Loughlin, Nazeem Hussain and Frank Woodley will be along for the ride, as will international acts such as Stephen K Amos, Jonathan Pie, and Jimeoin. Queerstories and Livewired return in 2020 as well.
Why: We’ve been laughing at death since the war went cold. It’s time for a change in stimuli.
