10) World Premiere ‘Last Chance Tango’ and ‘Something Better’

What: Two films, ‘Last Chance Tango’ and ‘Something Better’ by independent filmmaker, Sonja Strathearn will be shown at one event. ‘Last Chance Tango’ (50 mins) is a modern story set in a small city in the Midwest, USA about a man who sees a woman who strongly resembles his deceased wife. He tries to win her heart by learning Argentine tango together. ‘Something Better’ (22 mins) is a period drama about the filmmakers’ ancestors who emigrated from England, first to Mackay, Queensland, then Brisbane in the 1880s. A story of hope despite tragedy. Based on a true story. Created with actors who are some of the characters’ real descendants. Filmed in Queensland, Australia and the USA.
Why: Even if you fall asleep, the ticket stub will provide weeks of anecdotal intellectual superiority.
9) NYE Warehaús Party

What: In the true spirit of a midsummer’s bacchanal welcome in the new year with The Station. Why: If you find Lurmann’s Romeo and Juliet “aesthetically satisfying”, then congratulations. Your introduction into 2020 won’t be jarring at all. Giant acidic pools of vomit are right up your aesthetic alley.

Why: Get a taste of mediocrity before the next year-long vat of it.
5) Surfers Paradise Carnival
29th December-1st January
What: The annual Surfers Paradise Carnival will explode to life on Friday, starting a week of nonstop action. Along with two spectacular fireworks displays on New Year’s Eve, you will be able to enjoy an array of attractions and rides each day of the Carnival, including crowd favourites such as the Cup and Saucer and gravity-defying Pirate Ship. On New Year’s Eve, an 8pm fireworks show will allow young families to see fireworks earlier in the evening, a DJ will keep the crowds entertained until the traditional midnight countdown culminates in a 10-minute firework display.
Why: We’re unsure as to whether this will result in a higher or lower concentration of meth heads, but it’ll be interesting to find out.

4) Blackbird Celebrates New Years Eve

Why: We could beat it. A raging bushfire is pretty unforgettable. An increase in the wage gap, also pretty unforgettable. How about an actual beating? That in itself could beat a rooftop bar in terms of unforgettableness.

What: Because the best way to beat a hangover is to drink some more. Obviously. Come forget that hangover with these guys! Or just continue that NYE celebration and pretend those resolutions don’t start till tomorrow. We all know January doesn’t count as the actual start of the year right? Why: We can’t argue with this. It’s just solid logic.
