10) In The Shadows VAC Gallery Photography Exhibition Launch
9th November
What: The VAC Gallery in the lobby of the Victorian Archives Centre is launching a new photographic exhibition featuring both archival images from the State Government’s collection alongside contemporary street photography. Archival photographs afford us the opportunity to consider the shadows of the past, such as health problems for smokers which were intentionally unacknowledged by advertisers for decades, or in a more literal sense, spies, whose lives depended on the shadows to work effectively for their governments. Then there are the metaphorical shadows which are cast onto under-represented communities. On the contemporary side, street photographers explore issues ranging from living under the shadow of ‘big brother’ through to how we turn a blind eye to the social issues surrounding us.
Why: It’s an Instagram opportunity that you can incorrectly label ‘meta’. What are you waiting for?
9) SEXPO Australia
8th-10th November
What: SEXPO is the heart of Adult Retail and Entertainment, and there’s something for everyone. If you’re looking for that fun, different or special gift for a friend or loved one, you’re sure to find it at SEXPO. The entertainment is second to none, with international performers including The Fuel Girls direct from the United Kingdom, male and female stage acts, fetish demonstrations and audience participation competitions, including the world famous Amateur Strip Competition. What better way to spend a day out?
Why: We’d make a joke about the first few rows getting wet, but we’ve been to SEXPO. There’s nothing less sexy than a middle aged man at a stall desperately plugging butt plugs to try to earn enough money to pay his child support.

8) Wanderlust 108

What: Combining a 5K run, yoga, and meditation at your favourite local park, Wanderlust 108 is a field day for the mindful community. Join the global movement for a day of practice, fitness and spontaneous dance parties.

7) Melbourne International Dumpling Festival
4th November
What: From the organisers of hugely popular Momo Fest comes another culinary-packed festival dedicated to dumplings from around the world. Whether you’re a fan of xiao long bao, pierogies, gyoza, manti, mandoo, khinkali, pelmeni, momos, matzah balls, ravioli or one of the other countless dumpling variations, you’re going to have a delicious time at this event.
Why: And yet, racial harmony eludes us.
6) Beechworth Celtic Festival
8th-10th
What: This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Beechworth Celtic Festival. The Friday Night Celtic Concert will make a return this year with a great line up of Celtic Music, on Saturday, the festival will be coming back to the streets in the centre of town with loads of free events, such as Celtic music, pipe bands and Celtic dancing and there will be a food court and Celtic markets all in the main street of town. The theme for this year’s Tattoo will feature the energy of music and dance from Ireland in a 90-minute spectacular from the spectacular opening by the massed pipe bands to the stirring finale.
Why: Bagpipes, tartan and cuisine from a country that, for admittedly fully justified reasons, prizes potatoes. We’re aware of the deeply rooted racism that spurs certain Americans and Australians to staunchly claim Irish heritage, but for the first time, we truly admire the level of commitment and sacrifice that involves.

5) OUTintheOPEN Festival
3rd-10th November
What: Out in the Open is an annual festival held in Greater Shepparton, celebrating all things pride, diversity, and inclusion. Festival volunteers will be coordinating 12 events over the weekend, aiming to cater to everyone—if you can’t make it to everything, you’re sure to find one or two events that tickle your fancy. Events include a networking night, a night of eats and treats, a performance from a brilliant comedy duo, a Carnival Day with live entertainers, vendors, games, rides and more, a pop up club, a glamour party, a meditation event, a community brunch and a film screening.
Why: Be out and be seen by all of….Shepparton.

4) Peel Street Festival

What: Peel Street Festival will once again transform Peel Street into a wonderland of community celebrations in an inclusive, family, and doggo friendly public space. Why: If Peel Street could talk, its attempts at conversation would be so uninteresting no one would cast a second glance at the suddenly conscious talking stretch of concrete.

3) Ballarat Frolic Festival
4th-13th November
what: Frolic Festival is a week long celebration of regional Victoria’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, asexual (LGBTIQA+) arts and culture. The festival will kick off with the Launch and Art Show. Then over the next week there is everything from the Bush Dance featuring Northcote String Band; the first ever Carnival Day with live entertainment, stalls and food trucks all afternoon at Alfred Deakin Place; Granny Bingo bringing the laughs at Trades Hall; an afternoon of jazz and wine tasting; one of the most popular events ever Frolic Cabaret making a return; and Uptown Girl – a night of drag featuring Philmah Bocks, Jojo Zaho and Maude Boate. Head out west and join in to celebrate diversity and show your support for queer Ballarat.
Why: The only worthwhile reason to go to Ballarat other than the panning for gold demonstration at Sovereign Hill…okay it’s the only worthwhile reason to go to Ballarat.

2) Melbourne Night Noodle Markets
7th-24th November
What: The eagerly-awaited Melbourne Night Noodle Markets return to Birrarung Marr!
