10) Mirusia and The Original Seekers
20th October
What: Mirusia is one of Australia’s favourite singers and has won hearts around the globe as the star soprano of André Rieu and the Johann Strauss Orchestra. In this scintillating collaboration she shares the bill with the Original Seekers – the three founding members of The Seekers; Athol Guy, Keith Potger and Bruce Woodley, joined by long-time Seekers producer and guitarist/singer extraordinaire, Michael Cristiano.
Why: Hey, hey, hello, Mary Lou, you know what goes real swell with gentle folk pop? The sound-barrier-shattering screech of an opera singer favoured by Andre Rieu.
9) Boundless: The Festival of Indigenous and Culturally Diverse Writers
26th October
What: Boundless is a free all day event with readings, workshops, panel discussions, and performances for writers and readers. Featuring well known writers and exciting new voices, the second Boundless festival will be held at Bankstown Arts Centre, in the heart of multicultural Sydney.
Why: One of the few places you can go in Sydney where, due to the high crime rate, you can feel like you’re immersing yourself in a genuine artistic hub. Better get in quick. The light rail’s almost finished and the hipsters are pricking their ears up.
8) Rites of Passage Tattoo Festival
25th-27th October
What: Featuring over 350 of the best tattoo artists from Australia and across the globe. With a focus on creative talent, the line-up includes 350+ of Australia and the World’s best Tattoo Artists Tattooing Live, Huge Giveaways and Prizes across the weekend and Retail Vendors with awesome Tattoo related gear.
Why: A whole festival dedicated to the worst part of a hangover.

7) Billy Elliot The Musical
20th October-24th November
What: Featuring music by the legendary Elton John, book and lyrics by Lee Hall, choreography by Peter Darling and direction by Stephen Daldry, Billy Elliot the Musical has been seen by over 12 million people worldwide. Acclaimed by audiences and critics alike, it is the recipient of over 85 awards internationally. Set in a northern town during the miners’ strike of 1984/5, the show follows Billy’s journey from boxing ring to ballet class where he discovers a passion for dance that unites his family, inspires his community and changes his life forever.
Why: Remember the time when Elton John was much less of a media whore? No, we don’t either. It’s like contemplating the notion of infinity. Once you go beyond a certain point, it’s impossible to be shocked by magnitude.

6) The Marriage of Figaro
21st October-2nd November
What: Musically, this is the ultimate ensemble opera, with brilliant trios, quartets and even a fantastic sextet. Dramatically, it’s the opera with everything: lovers and liaisons, disguises and tricks, lust and laughter. The Countess loves the Count, but he’s got designs on his pretty, witty servant Susanna. But it’s Susanna’s wedding day, and Figaro has no plans of giving up his bride. During one crazy day of disguises, duplicity, desire and utter madness, the Count is going to get his comeuppance. Sir David McVicar’s naturalistic staging opens a “comic cauldron of sex and social politics” (Limelight), where the comedy has a dark, sharp edge.
Why: It’s a reality show, but with impassioned singing, wild regalia, royal titles and exaggerated reactions. So, you know. Far more realistic.

3) Festival of Mosman
20th-27th October
What: Festival of Mosman is Mosman’s biggest biennial community celebration, with the theme of ‘Celebrating Mosman, our community and culture’. Highlights include a Traditional Sunset Ceremony on Balmoral Beach, an Italian feast on the Village Green: Dinner on the Green, the OctoberFeast night market and an outdoor cinema movie marathon. Popular favourites include outdoor concerts at Balmoral, Children’s Fair and Pet’s Day Out.
Why: Just to make sure you really get a taste of Mosman’s community and culture, there’ll be an exhibition of the all the ‘for sale’ signs from the past year and in the place of the artist’s signature, there’ll be the amount of zeroes involved expressed in a single number.

2) Sydney Indie Film Festival

What: The Sydney Indie Film Festival has been created to showcase both local and international, new and creative works by emerging and established artists who are passionate about story telling via the art of film making.
Why: If you’re not prepared to pretend to be aware of every niche foreign film title thrown at you during what’s supposed to be light conversation, be prepared to pretend to a mute. Or better yet don’t turn up at all. Most of the hipsters at this thing probably know sign language.

1) Sculpture By The Sea
24th October-10th November
What: Sculpture by the Sea returns to the Bondi Beach to Tamarama Beach coastal walk as the world’s largest free to the public sculpture exhibition. See the spectacular coastal walk transformed into a 2km long sculpture park over three weeks featuring 100 sculptures by artists from Australia and across the world.
Why: Yes, folks, it’s that time of year again. As Sydney-siders we’re all aware of the time wherein experimental sculptors will dot the beach walk of Sydney with their work and we all pretend to be able to discern the good from the bad and wildly punctuate the conversation with the term ‘bourgeois’.
