10) Royal Melbourne Wine Awards Presentation Dinner
17th October
What: The RMWA is the biggest and most recognised wine awards within the Australian wine industry. Join RASV’s Chair of Judges Matt Harrop and his team as they announce Australia’s award-winning wines, winemakers and wineries. This prestigious evening will include the announcement of the 2019 trophy winners across eight major trophies, culminating in the presentation of the coveted Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy. Guests will have the opportunity to try a selection of the winning wines including the Jimmy Watson winner, expertly matched to an elaborate bespoke menu.
Why: A reward for alcohol that’s not a quick easy escape from a horrifying reality? This is too much!
9) Naretha Williams Korvin presents Between Worlds
19th October
What: As an interdisciplinary experimental artist, Naretha’s processed based work is informed by several key points of inquiry – bio data, cultural practice, place and esoteric frameworks. Working predominantly in audio arts with foundations in performing and fine arts, Naretha will discuss her approach through topics relating to identity and displacement, technology and science, contemporary ritual and hybrid lineage.
Why: Waxing lyrical has never so powerfully stoked the desire to literally pour hot wax into ones own ears.
8) The Lady of the Swamp
14th-19th October
What: This is a musical. It is a true story. It involves theft, murder and corruption at the top of the new Australian bank and legal world. The story begins in 1907 and ends in 1980. This performance features 14 original songs which highlight key elements of the story performed by a band and sung in 3 and 4 part harmonies with relevant imagery projected onto a backdrop.
Why: This is a musical. There will be whisky. Life is a balancing act between pain and joy.

7) LuNa
18th-20th October
What: LuNa is the latest play from Keziah Warner (Control) that delicately dissects an unconventional journey through sisterhood, the unique bond between twins and the unprecedented medical breakthrough that got in the way. Under the direction of Kitan Petkovski (Daffodils), an ensemble of five women unearth the grit and heart of this poetic, raging and exhilarating new Australian play.
Why: The promo for this play sounds uncannily like a promo for one of Marvel or DC’s new supers. Hence, it should be easy for you to trap your most irritatingly boring relative unwittingly into a whole torturous hour of contemporary theatre.

6) Wild Feast presented by Slowbeer
15th October
What: Slowbeer presents Wild Feast, an intimate masterclass talking all things wild fermentation, barrel ageing and blending with a favourite adopted Kiwi brewery, Garage Project. You’ll be joined by lead man on the ground in Oz, Adam Holliday & Wild Workshop Head Brewer, Dave Bell. You’ll be tasting and discussing some of the brewery’s newest and most exciting limited releases accompanied by grazing from Fara Feasts, designed to complement the beers in focus, as well as a natural, leafy aesthetic that ties into the wild theme.
Why: Ever heard of the phrase, “eyes bigger than your stomach”? That phrase will not apply hear.
5) St Hugo Wines: Melbourne Degustation Dinner
17th October
What: The team at 161 Cellars has paired two icons to bring you a tasting experience you wont forget. St Hugo wines from Barossa Valley and The French Brasserie Restaurant. Enjoy an exclusive dinner menu by the Chef at the French Brasserie paired with 5 fine wines from the St Hugo portfolio. These include the St Hugo Collection, the Cellar Collection and the St Hugo Vetus Purum. The chief St Hugo winemaker will be joining you from the Barossa Valley to talk you through his wines in detail and tell the St Hugo story.
Why: The appeal of this one isn’t hard to identify. Just think back to the last time someone started a sentence with “This is the story of Saint…” and what the priest ordered you to do after the sermon, and drink until you’re unable to hear the voice of the St Hugo winemaker.
4) Polyphonic Social: Natasha Tontey, Sarah crowEST, Zou Zhao

What: Polyphonic Social 2019 unfolds across three events, occupying the Convent’s historic, recently restored Magdalen Laundry with experimental sound, performance, and installation. While the program’s heart beats conceptually, its skeleton structure is a powerful multi speaker-stack sound system, which will be deployed by artists to articulate the cavernous space of the industrial building in uncanny, immersive, and unexpected ways.
Why: If you’re adrift in a sea of pointlessness, just come and see what these guys have to offer. They’ve literally turned pointlessness into a fine art.
3) Sea Shepherd’s Ocean Defence Tour
19th October
What: Enjoy a full day of stalls, vegan food vendors, live music, speakers, and ship tours on the recently retired flagship MV Steve Irwin. Sea Shepherd has been on the front line for over 40 years relentlessly defending the world’s oceans. For this festival, they’re welcoming special guest speakers Captain Alistair Allan of Sea Shepherd Global and Jeff Hansen, Managing Director of Sea Shepherd Australia. Come and hear first hand what this lean and effective movement is doing in tackling the biggest threats around Australia’s coasts and globally. This is a fight we cannot afford to lose, for if we lose this fight, we all lose.
Why: There’s no more effective way to entice people into action than with vegan food and a defunct ship.
