10) Burwood Festival
13th October
What: More than 77,000 people are expected at Burwood Park for the largest free event in Sydney’s inner west – an action-packed day of performances, rides and market stalls. The theme for this year’s festival is `Burwood Wonderland’. Headlining the entertainment will be a musician who first gained attention as a boy on the X-Factor, Jai Waetford. Mitch and Mark from TV’s `The Block’ will be on hand to meet festival-goers, while children can watch the Paw Patrol stage show and meet the characters. Pony rides, an acrobatics display and a classic car show are among the other attractions.
Why: 77,000 people. So many distracting, loud, horrible things. So many chances for you to accidentally lose sight of your income-draining children. So little accountability.

9) Deepavali Festival of Lights
16th October
What: The Hindu Council Australia presents Deepavali Festival of Lights in the heart of Sydney Australia. There will lots of fun cultural and Bollywood dance performances, jewellery stalls and Indian street food.
Why: A festival of lights at 12pm in Sydney at the end of Spring. Well, the sun is one big light, we suppose.
8) KURIOS – Cabinet Des Curiosités
13th October-24th November
What: Cirque du Soleil will bring its newest creation to Australia: KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities. Created and directed by Michel Laprise, Kurios looks at a late 19th-century world inventor who invents a machine that defies the laws of time, space, and dimension in order to reinvent everything around him with steampunk elements featuring characters from another dimension that interact with him and a tribute to the power of the human imagination.
Why: Oh yeah. Those inventors from the 1800s were all about steampunk. Charles Darwin was really into Final Fantasy VI when he wasn’t drawing finch beaks.

7) The Marriage of Figaro
18th October-2nd November
What: Musically, this is the ultimate ensemble opera, with brilliant trios, quartets and even a fantastic sextet. Dramatically, it’s the opera with everything: lovers and liaisons, disguises and tricks, lust and laughter. The Countess loves the Count, but he’s got designs on his pretty, witty servant Susanna. But it’s Susanna’s wedding day, and Figaro has no plans of giving up his bride. During one crazy day of disguises, duplicity, desire and utter madness, the Count is going to get his comeuppance. Sir David McVicar’s naturalistic staging opens a “comic cauldron of sex and social politics” (Limelight), where the comedy has a dark, sharp edge.
Why: It’s a reality show, but with impassioned singing, wild regalia, royal titles and exaggerated reactions. So, you know. Far more realistic.

6) Billy Elliot The Musical
13th October-24th November
What: Featuring music by the legendary Elton John, book and lyrics by Lee Hall, choreography by Peter Darling and direction by Stephen Daldry, Billy Elliot the Musical has been seen by over 12 million people worldwide. Acclaimed by audiences and critics alike, it is the recipient of over 85 awards internationally. Set in a northern town during the miners’ strike of 1984/5, the show follows Billy’s journey from boxing ring to ballet class where he discovers a passion for dance that unites his family, inspires his community and changes his life forever.
Why: Remember the time when Elton John was much less of a media whore? No, we don’t either. It’s like contemplating the notion of infinity. Once you go beyond a certain point, it’s impossible to be shocked by magnitude.

5) Swan Lake – Russian Ballet
18th & 19th October
What: The Imperial Russian Ballet Company return to Australia with Swan Lake…the most loved classical ballet of them all. This masterpiece ballet is presented in two acts and follows the original storyline. Subtle revisions and variations have been introduced by Gediminas Taranda, Artistic Director of the Imperial Russian Ballet Company. Swan Lake crosses the world of magic and mystical creatures with that of the real world. It is a story where the virtues of love and forgiveness in the end conquer evil and betrayal.
Why: To think, when this ballet debuted, it was not well-received, and the character names were considered jarringly unpronounceable. If only at the time they’d had the brainwave of Darren Aronofsky and added far more cunning linguists.

4) Hills Food and Wine Festival
13th October
What: The Hills Food and Wine Festival will centre around beverage sampling premium wine, spirits, beer/cider, live music, food market stalls and rides for the kids. There will even be a couple of stalls for pet lovers. Why not bring your friends along and enjoy a couple of glasses of wine on the day & delicious food. This is an event not to be missed.
Why: Certainly any event that feeds your addiction and makes your friends tolerable is not to be missed. Although Bella Vista Farm is a long way to travel and there is a raging cocaine epidemic in Sydney. It’s up to you.
3) In Harmony Festival
14th-16th October
What: This year, as part of mental health month, Mostly Mad Music is taking music from the concert halls to the streets of Sydney in a series of pop-up chamber music concerts. Music performances will be themed by mood, so YOU get to choose the mood you want to be in.
Why: Chamber music without the pomp and circumstance of a chamber. In other words, utterly pointless. Live chamber music does nothing for your ego without a ten dollar glorified Cornetto in your hand.

2) Bon Fromage: Festival of European Cheeses
18th-20th October
What: Join Carriageworks to experience the taste of Europe. This year’s festival will feature a 60-metre free tasting table loaded with over 1 tonne of cheese, showcasing more than 20 varieties of cheese from France. Enjoy cheese masterclasses and cooking demonstrations on the main stage. Purchase cheese from some of Sydney’s leading cheese provedors including Simon Johnson, Occello and The Artisan Cheese Room. Try one-off dishes created just for the festival from KOI Dessert Bar, BL Burgers and Loluk Bistro. Bon appétit!
Why: If you’re planning to renovate your bathroom, this is the time to do it. After this festival you won’t shit for a month.
