10) ‘Wanderlust’ Champagne & Canapes with Wendy Sharpe
10th October
What: Come join Wendy Sharpe and members of the MAG&M Society for an evening at the gallery featuring a walk through the exhibition, Wanderlust. Wendy will be ‘in conversation’ with broadcaster and author Scott Bevan. Celebrated Australian artist Wendy Sharpe’s globetrotting explorations over the past decade are the inspiration for this evocative and vibrant collection of paintings, travel diaries and film. From the Southern Lights of Antarctica, to Mexico’s Day of the Dead, to camel market in Cairo and on the streets of Paris, this exhibition reflects the profound visual and sensorial experiences of travel.
Why: As painful as any champagne-sipping ‘Wendy’ waxing lyrical about their world travels, but with the minimal upshot of saying that you went to what is technically an art exhibition.
9) National Swap Day
6th October
What: This year will be the ninth annual National Swap Day and to commemorate the day, The Clothing Exchange will host clothing swaps. National Swap Day is the biggest swap on the calendar and it’s a great time to share the joys of swapping. Bring up to eight items and celebrate the global phenomenon of swapping over a glass of bubbles and nibbles!
Why: Bored of being internally riddled with your own strain of mould? Sample someone else’s!

8) When Gods Walked the Earth
10th October
What: When Gods Walked the Earth is a project developed through a series of artworks inspired by René Girard’s mimetic theory, and developed through an intellectual dialogue between artist Mauro De Giorgi and philosopher Diego Bubbio over the past few years. The intent is to highlight everlasting themes that are prominent in our culture and society, such as the mimetic nature of desire, violence, sacrifice and scapegoating.
Why: A bunch of holier than thou pseudo-intellectuals swanning around a gallery sporting an exhibition entitled ‘When Gods Walked the Earth’? Mimesis doesn’t need to apply to violence to be morally troubling.

7) Poetry & Song: Peter Boyle & Christina Christensen
12th October
What: Garden Lounge is hosting one writer and one musical act for your edification and/or entertainment. Relaxed atmosphere, cosy space, heart of Newtown. Peter Boyle is a Sydney-based poet and translator of poetry. His eight books of poetry include Ghostspeaking (2016) which won the Kenneth Slessor Award for Poetry and was shortlisted for the South Australian Premier’s Award. Christina has travelled the world with her cello playing professionally in ensembles, bands and orchestras. She enjoys composing music for cello, often inspired by nature, moments in time and other artists.
Why: Be tag-teamed, but contemporary art style. Expect exactly the same amount of respect for your most delicate body parts.
6) Cirque du Soleil: KURIOS – Cabinet Des Curiosités
6th October-24th November
What: Cirque du Soleil will bring its newest creation to Australia: KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities. Created and directed by Michel Laprise, Kurios looks at a late 19th-century world inventor who invents a machine that defies the laws of time, space, and dimension in order to reinvent everything around him with steampunk elements featuring characters from another dimension that interact with him and a tribute to the power of the human imagination.
Why: Oh yeah. Those inventors from the 1800s were all about steampunk. Charles Darwin was really into Final Fantasy VI when he wasn’t drawing finch beaks.

5) Billy Elliot The Musical
10th October-24th November
What: Featuring music by the legendary Elton John, book and lyrics by Lee Hall, choreography by Peter Darling and direction by Stephen Daldry, Billy Elliot the Musical has been seen by over 12 million people worldwide. Acclaimed by audiences and critics alike, it is the recipient of over 85 awards internationally. Set in a northern town during the miners’ strike of 1984/5, the show follows Billy’s journey from boxing ring to ballet class where he discovers a passion for dance that unites his family, inspires his community and changes his life forever.
Why: Remember the time when Elton John was much less of a media whore? No, we don’t either. It’s like contemplating the notion of infinity. Once you go beyond a certain point, it’s impossible to be shocked by magnitude.

4) Sofitel Wine Days: Laurent-Perrier x Tyson Stelzer Masterclass

3) Good Food Month
1st-31st October
What: Some of the world’s best chefs will descend on Sydney for the 21st edition of Good Food Month. Taking over restaurants across the city this October, the annual food festival will see pop-up restaurants and dinners from the likes of Alain Passard, Hiroyuki Sato and Thomas Frebel, as well as pasta parties, vegan feasts and the return of the Night Noodle Markets.
Why: The coroner’s report from your multiple coronary-induced death will sound so much more colourful with the names ‘Passard’, ‘Sato’ and ‘Frebel’ under ’cause’.
