10) K Motionz Live

What: At just 19, K Motionz has already become one of the most in-demand Drum & Bass producers in the UK. His 16-track debut album ‘The Evolution’ released on D-Stortion in 2018. He makes up 1/4 of Drum & Bass supergroup Distress Signal with Kanine, Simula & IC3. His first single ‘Bloodbath’ was released on Alpha9 in 2012, well before he could legally enter venues where his music was being played. Since then, he’s received support from top DJs including Chase & Status, Brockie and Kings of the Rollers. Experience him live.
Why: A young prodigy of drum & bass. Ugh. At least that ‘cup stacking’ bullshit only appeared in the worlds consciousness briefly because of Johnny Carson and once more like a resurfacing bloated corpse on YouTube. This unimpressive pointless thing is apparently here to stay, largely because it’s always accompanied by alcohol. One of alcohol’s few true evils.

9) San Mei ‘Something Good’ Tour

What: Having played a mammoth nine shows at SXSW to huge international buzz, Gold Coast artist San Mei today unveils her new single ‘Something Good’, her first release with Australian indie label etcetc (home to artist like PNAU, George Maple and more). Produced alongside Oscar Dawson (Holy Holy, Alex Lahey, Ali Barter, British India), ‘Something Good’ is another step forward in the guitar heavy, delay-ridden, dreamy pop that is San Mei. Why: If only her releases were as delay-ridden as her pop. Surprising they’re not given they’re equally as unnecessary.

8) Thomston ‘Enroute’ Tour

What: It could be intimidating walking the popstar path from New Zealand to the world but 23-year-old Thomas Stoneman AKA. Thomston has taken it in his stride. From impressing blogs with an experimental EP he released for free in 2014, Thomston went onto hone in on his song writing and craft effortlessly written pop songs. Over the past few years, he’s walked and carved his own path, establishing himself as more than an internet favourite and furthering the Kiwis impeccable reputation for left-centred pop music. Experience him live.
Why: A centre-left indie pop musician. There’s a redundancy in there. Interestingly, we’re not referring to the musician himself.

7) Sound Offering IV: Phantom Chips
28th September
What: Join Brisbane-based performer Phantom Chips, for the fourth edition of Sound Offering, Boxcopy’s monthly program that invites sound artists and experimental musicians to produce an evening of listening. Phantom Chips creates participatory performances and music compositions using her own DIY, wearable instruments. The tactile, fabric-based electronic instruments enable new expressive ways to make sounds through movements and gestures—stretching, stroking and squeezing—inviting audience participation.
Why: It was just a matter of time before that homeless person with the ability to create uncomfortable aural experiences for a vaguely unwilling audience whilst touching themselves was given a platform in the contemporary art sphere.
6) Bavarian Haus Oktoberfest

What: The Bavarian Haus’s Oktoberfest is jam-packed full of Germany’s finest brews, mouth-watering German eats and the best live music to get you grooving in your seat! Be an ally cat with general admission to the lane-way. knock back a few cold ones from the exclusive Bier Van, chow down on a toasty bretzel or juicy wurst from a vendor and challenge your buds to a game of giant Jenga or Connect Four. Traditional dress is optional, but who doesn’t love dressing up?

5) Guy Sebastian: Ridin’ With You Tour

4) Bohemian Beatfreaks Brisbane Launch Party

What: Euca Music and Melt are joining forces for the official Bohemian Beatfreaks Brisbane Launch Party at Sub Rosa. Featuring epic live shows from headliners Thankyou City (Melbourne) and Cheshire (New Zealand) wedged in the middle of 13 hours of house, techno, minimal, progressive, glitch, bass, drum and bass and funk, this is a big spring festival warm-up for the main Beatfreaks event in November. Sound by Void Acoustics. Decor by Melt.
Why: A party featuring generic club music is considered ‘Bohemian’. This is like that time when we were all expected to believe James Franco as Allen Ginsberg.

2) Brisbane Festival
22nd-28th September
What: Boldly Brisbane and gloriously global, the festival shines a spotlight on a packed program of spellbinding shows, provocative performances and illuminating installations that will set the city alight. Queensland’s largest arts and cultural event will host 454 performances of 83 shows, involving over 908 artists from around the world. This year’s theme is based on the (other) three Rs: Revels, Revelations and Romance.
Why: It’s about time they came up with another use for that old phrase. Apple’s replaced basic literacy and numeracy skills and environmental sustainability probably causes autism so we might as well eat, party and screw our way to the sparkling grave.

What: Listen Out is Australia’s premier dance music event, bringing quality dance music to four spectacular inner city venues across Australia this spring. Heading up the dance, electronic, and hip hop party this year will be Diplo, rap heavyweight ScHoolboy Q, Atlanta polymath 6LACK, and Flume and many many more.
Why: It’s not enough that this genre infects nearly every place that serves life-giving substances every night. They had to erect an annual festival for it too.
