The distillers or as they like to call themselves Spirit Geeks, will take you through their entire range of gins and immerse you in the Animus story. Why: The alcohol-pushers have claimed the mantle ‘geek’. It’s a lovely example of how the appropriation of a subset of a society’s culture doesn’t always have to be offensive.

7) The Battle of Bendigo: Jeff Horn vs Michael

What: Jeff Horn, Australia’s greatest active boxer makes his Victorian debut against tough Melbourne boxer, Michael Zerafa. The Battle of Bendigo for Horn is crucial. His team are in discussions for a world title in his next fight and a loss to Zerafa will destroy those aspirations. While for Zerafa a win will elevate him as the only Australian to beat Jeff Horn and put himself into contention for World Title glory.
Why:Apparently, two grown men literally beating the crap out of each other is life-affirming to some. Considering what the majority of grown men have been doing to each other on the world stage in recent history it’s hard to argue with that.
6) Father’s Day Whisky High Tea

What: Bring dad in for an indulgent affair of sweet and savoury delights with whisky infused treats and a paired whisky flight. A truly memorable experience for flavour aficionados!
Why: A fathers day event that doesn’t require you to sow extra pockets inside your jacket to stash the thing that makes your father’s views on politics and race tolerable.

4) Gin, Wine Tasting & BBQ with Andrew Marks

What: Gin Society and The Local Drop have teamed up with local wine and gin maker, Andrew Marks. Andrew makes wines under Gembrook Hill and The Wanderer labels, and is also the man behind Melbourne Gin Company. Enjoy a showcase of both of his gins and a selected line up of his wines. There’ll gourmet snags on the BBQ and a selection of cheese from Harper & Blohm.
Why: Wine, Gin, processed meat. It’s a faster and far more meaningful way to go out than world war three precipitated by a tweet.
3) Craft Cubed Festival
25th-31st August
What: Now in its tenth year, the Craft Cubed Festival, a month-long, state-wide celebration of making, community and creative experimentation returns with a program embracing events, exhibitions and happenings from across the Victorian maker landscape. The theme of Crafting Culture invites the community to think about the ways in which the act of making connects and forges our cultural lives, be it across generations, across time, across geography. Expect both traditional and experimental interpretations of what it means to be involved in craft in 2019.
Why: Come one, come all to the sacred land of things Vinnie’s considers ‘unsaleable’.

2) Ballarat International Foto Biennale
25th August-20th October
What: The Ballarat International Foto Biennale is one of Australia’s pre-eminent photographic festivals. Pprogram highlights include To the Moon and Back, in recognition of the Apollo moon landing 50 years ago, A History of Misogyny, Chapter One: On Abortion, a stark look at women’s reproductive rights, and Adi Nes’s homoerotic portraiture, which delves into questions of gender, masculinity and humanism.
Why: One of the few events that features the art of photography in which your data won’t be sold at a major profit. Though if you do decide to use Instagram while you’re there, that’s your prerogative.

1) Channels Festival: International Biennial of Video Art
25th August-15th September
What: The 2019 Channels Festival highlights Australian and international artists working across video and performance. The festival, curated by Kelli Alred, will present artworks that blur fact with fiction and deconstruct notions of belonging, complicity and resistance to challenge our understanding of difference, connectivity, power and place.
Why: We know. It reads like an HSC syllabus. But then again, wouldn’t it be a lovely thing to regress to that era when you could say ‘ugh, I just want to kill myself’, rather than, ‘I hope I can go to the movies without someone trying murder me’?
