Top 10 Melbourne Culture On this week 09/06/2019

It’s time to make a deal with the Devil. Again. And just like last time, tequila will be involved.

10) Artists’ Talks: Lauren Bamford and Lydia Wegner

15th June

What: Join exhibiting artists Lauren Bamford, and Lydia Wegner as they discuss the concept and process behind the commission Robin Boyd, a portrait of an Australian house. The commission invited Bamford and Wegner to respond to the Wright House in Warrandyte, one of Boyd’s iconic family homes. The resulting new work is presented with a unique architectural intervention in the gallery.

Why: Think of it like your rich hipster acquaintance that stalks historically noteworthy buildings for inspiration for their new kitchen, but, you know, this time it’s legitimate artistic expression and not just a supercilious hipster trend because…uh…because…

7) Dr Faustus Lights the Lights

15th June

What: Gertrude Stein, one of the giants of modernist formalism, takes the Faust myth for what could be seen as an eco-feminist spin: selling your soul for electric light. This production, DFLTLX, asks how we might think about that now, in terms of the pact we have each made with technology, and explores the impact of her brilliant, sparkling text in performance.

Why: We’d always ruminated on the devil as a concept rather than a sublime corporeal form. Turns out we were wrong. The devil is real. Contemporary experimental theatre still exists.

3) Do It Like An Italian: Italian Wine Tasting Event

15th June

What: Traverse Italy in a metaphorical Fiat Bambino, drinking old favourites (ciao sangiovese & pinot grigio) and making new friends (benvenuto negroamaro and cataratto) all in a single afternoon. This event will showcase Italy in all her glory – from north to south and red to white (with a couple of sparklers in there to keep things bubbling along).

Why: Do it like an Italian. Understand that screaming into the abyss of a recession marred by corruption can only relieve your emotional tumult for so long. Then drink.
