This week is about being conscious of the earth. By which we mean drinking in a field and grinding on strangers to the sounds of generic contemporary Prog-Rock and Psytrance.
10) Techstars Startup Weekend
15th-17th February
What: Startup Weekend is your chance to collaborate and get involved with a group of motivated individuals hell-bent on disrupting their industry of choice. Anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea. Teams organically form around the top ideas (determined by popular vote). Then, it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation.
Why: Finally a moral alternative to going to church on a Sunday. At least this room full of people are willing to admit they’re amoral psychopaths.

9) APT9 Talk: Confronting Contemporary Art

What: What have you always wanted to know about contemporary art? In this informal, interactive seminar series with Dr Mark Pennings, Senior Lecturer, Visual Arts, Queensland University of Technology, look closely at artworks, ask questions, and discover the big ideas behind contemporary art in APT9.
Why: Just a heads up: “Why are you getting paid for this?” is apparently not a legitimate question.
8) Unseen: Donna Davis

What: Unseen by Brisbane artist Donna Davis uses sculpture, installation and digital media to evoke curiosity and contemplation about the intricate, and often unseen, living networks that nurture and sustain our planet.
Why: Looks like the kid that peeled the skin off frogs and stuck worms up their nose has finally grown up.

7) Sand Safari Arts Festival
16th February
What: Sand Safari Arts Festival transforms Surfers Paradise into a captivating beachside exhibition of life-sized and even larger than life art pieces. See 10 tonne sand sculptures, multicolour tentacles bursting out of the sand, a sculptural sand crab migration and even a full scale pirate ship resting on the beach. Take part in many games and fun activities and enjoy with whole family!
Why: It is quite impressive how they’ve used broken beach heroin needles to evoke the sense of hollow despair in the sand-tentacle-monster’s eyes.

6) MONO31 with France Jobin
12th February
What: Jobin is and artist. Her sonic work has been described as sound sculpture, fusing both musical and visual elements to create experiential environments where analogue and digital intersect. She will present Intrication, a work inspired by quantum entanglement, seeking to discover the relationship between sound and observing sound.
Why: Or you could just wait until your morning commute to work and watch the boobs jiggle on the fat party bro on the train next to you every time the beat drops.

5) Technicolour Chinese New Year Night Market
16th February
What: Come and join the Multicultural Community Centre to have a fun night and immerse yourself in a red (“good luck” in Chinese culture) and gold (“fortune” in Chinese culture) themed celebration. With traditional Chinese performances, delicious Asian cuisine, free Yee Sang Tasting, a traditional Chinese crafts workshop, lantern riddles, kids carnival games and many other unique & spectacular activities!
Why: The family event for the week, Brisbane. About as loud and distracting enough as Yo Gabba Gabba, but you’re much less likely to want to commit mass murder.
4) BrisAsia Festival Summer Party
16th February
What: Celebrate Asian pop-culture with a huge line-up of talented performers including: Cosplay and craft markets, games, K-pop, C-pop, J-pop, an eating competition, yummy food stalls and an Anime dance showcase.
Why: If you’re over the age of 16, unaccompanied by a child and choose to attend this event…nothing will happen to you. Your life is pathetic enough. It would be like crunching a stale potato chip into the ground.
