You Want What You Want with Kodaline

Temptation is something invariably variable.

For instance, this morning we had the temptation to smoke a cigarette, which we did. But just now we had the temptation to use a confusing and ultimately sh***y turn of phrase, which we did.

Temptation is never satisfied, it’s simply the most adaptable psychological thing to which we have access. It’s not dictated by morality or immorality, though it can sometimes come in the form of both. There is a temptation to give five bucks to the homeless person in order to morally take a shower before you give into the temptation to blow five hundred dollars on cocaine and the kind of lube that’s organic but makes your junk smell nice.

Unfortunately, it does not always occur in such a balanced manner. Sometimes after both inhaling a load and taking a load you’re tempted to walk out on the street, buy a greasy burger and kick a screaming toddler in the face. But we’re factoring in the comedown there, as well.

The point is, temptation does not exist in opposition to self-control. It is a form of self-control. We are propelled by our temptations and morality is the little barking dog that runs after it making us feel like angels or s**theads in equal measure. And every so often there comes along something which accurately displays the fact that temptation itself is amoral. Something that combines everything into one big confusing soup that’s neither good nor bad, it simply is. Something like Kodaline.

Kodaline are an Irish rock band. Originally known as 21 Demands, the band adopted their current name in 2012 to coincide with the changing of their music. Kodaline’s sound is variable, diaphanous, and graceful – moving from motivational to nostalgic to quietly optimistic to encapturing a simple view of love – they can do it all. Experience them live.

They’re everything they want to be, including many things they shouldn’t be. But who are you to judge? You’re someone who’s tempted to judge them whilst eating peanut butter in your underwear, that’s who. And this is your bloody soundtrack.
