Fiddle with Your Mind with Nicola Benedetti

It’s becoming more and more immoral to produce one’s own mental sedative.

As children raised in the shadowy era before the emergence of Smash Mouth, we became adept at spontaneously producing that warming brain blanket that was triggered the first time the end credits of Daria were cut short by the intro to The Nanny.

It’s a special kind of drugged out mindset that acknowledges that our parents were right, the world was going to hell in a hand-basket, we’re now in hell in a hand-basket, and yet confirms our parents were wrong about precisely everything else.

But the era of rebellious inaction is over. We’re now adults with the ability to spew our own wombs all over ourselves at will but with absolutely no justification for doing so.

So we’ve only one moral option left when the demons of the 21st Century just won’t stop screaming in our ears: violin interludes.

Violinist Nicola Benedetti will share stories and music straight from her home during lockdown as part of the Royal Albert Home sessions. Nicola is among the most sought-after violinists of her generation. She won the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Classical Instrumental Solo, and was named Best Female Artist at both the 2012 and 2013 Classical BRIT Awards. She has played the Hall on numerous occasions, including the 2012 Last Night of the Proms as well as two headline concerts. She is a long-standing supporter of the Hall’s Education & Outreach programme and has hosted a number of workshops for young musicians.

We’ve no excuse for pulling the rip cord of our 90s wombs during a time in which mobilisation is imperative.

But drowning out all other sounds, including those of a terrifying reality, with intrusive classical music? That will never not be pretentiously justified.
