A Moment Outside of a Different Time with the Vienna State Opera
In times such as these it’s often brought up that the most incredible examples of art, music and scientific discovery occurred during times of strife, uncertainty and, indeed, quarantine.
But the people bleating these sweet nothings always fail to mention societies like the ancient Romans who were having a whale of a time enjoying their feats of engineering, advances in surgery, air conditioning, development of advanced military tactics, the postal service and rudimentary socialism before the barbarians came along.
The point is, reaching back into history for some semblance of comfort is only useful when the comforting thing isn’t some apocryphal platitude based on the creation of a work of genius in its time, but rather, appreciation of the work itself. There is no more apt representation of this, particularly in 2020, than the 19th Century work of a German composer.
Wagner created some of the richest most complex operas of all time and the Vienna State Opera will be sharing past performances of his work Siegfried via free daily online streams, alongside operas from other European composers. Experience the majesty of the Viennese opera alongside a worldwide audience.
This is a trying time for all of us, and we all could use a brief reprieve filled with romantic librettos and incredible staging.
Just don’t mention the war.
