Why: Imagine a garden, but all the flowers are screaming at you and the insects are laying eggs in your brain. That imagined aural soundscape might just drown out the noise of another night of generic rave.

9) Novel x Other People pres. Gerd Janson

What: Gerd Janson is one of the most highly respected DJs in the world of house and techno. Quite often, “highly respected” goes hand-in-hand with “underrated” but over the past few years, audiences around the world have also found out what insider types already knew: Janson is a DJ that reconfigures the classics you already knew in an unexpected way, and introduces you to new classics, a few months (or years) before you’ll hear them played everywhere else.
Why: He’s one of the most highly respected DJs in the world of house and techno. Kind of like being one of the most chicken-like objects in a KFC 10 piece bucket.
8) Innervate: Psyk

What: In the second instalment of Innervate, presented by Konnekt’D & Doppler, they introduce the Madrid & Berlin based heavyweight Psyk (Non Series / Mote-Evolvolver / Semantica) to Australian soil. Manuel Anós AKA Psyk has crafted a name for himself as one of the most sought out underground artist of this era. Renowned for his sets at Fabric, Berghain, Fuse, Concrete & many more, he is no stranger to delivering Techno that is considered dreamy yet & hard hitting, not to mention being the head-honcho of the label Non-Series; Psyk’s back catalogue of productions is nothing short of impressive.
Why: It’s 2019 and this is our underground. Perhaps too much freedom is a bad thing.

What: After his very own SOLD OUT performance at Sparks mania Adelaide, one of Melbourne’s most influential EDM artists Will Sparks is back in his home town with an exclusive underground event for his real OG fans! A special once off Sunday sesh with the one that helped make the scene into what it is today.
Why: So actual work went into creating EDM? We always assumed some guy passed out on a synth connected to wound-out speakers and then they just kept redistributing the noise that came out all over SoundCloud.

6) Wolves in the Throne Room (Live)

They are considered one of the most potent and highly regarded bands in heavy metal today. Thrice Woven, their latest release received high praise from the press and the band received the 2018 Metal Hammer Golden Gods Award for Best Underground Band. Since the release of THRICE WOVEN the band has toured relentlessly as a headlining act, and as support for Behemoth and At the Gates across the USA and Europe. Now prepare for the return of Wolves in the Throne Room to Australia and New Zealand for the first time in 10 years!
Why: It’s not to our taste, but, you know, some people like the smell of gasoline, some like sticking their whole heads into industrial wood-chippers. It takes all kinds to make a world. And this world is…just…great.
5) Alfa Mist (Live)

What: Foreign Brothers & ASTRAL PEOPLE are thrilled to announce the debut Melbourne show of UK-based producer, rapper, composer & pianist Alfa Mist. Counting Frank Ocean & Gilles Peterson as fans, Alfa Mist purveys a sound that blends melancholy jazz harmony with alternative hip-hop and soul. His latest full length follows on from his first official release Nocturne (2015), featuring collaborations with Tom Misch and Jordan Rakei and saw NME name him a ‘rising London star’. Following the release of his widely acclaimed 2017 album Antiphon, Alfa Mist solidified his place at the top of London’s burgeoning jazz scene. Experience him live.
Why: “London’s burgeoning jazz scene”. Well, it only took a hundred years, but this niche genre seems to be really catching on. We dig.

4) Sounds of AfroBeats Festival

What: Australia’s largest Afrobeats festival – Sounds of Afrobeats Festival, hits Melbourne shores for the first time at the contemporary The Third Day. The festival will showcase music from the African diaspora (such as Afro-House; Afro-Jazz; Dancehall; Soca; Afrobeats; Afro-Latin) as well as breathtaking special guest performances, creating a vibe and experience like no other! Featuring: Jerry C, Naynay, Kristelle, Versatile and Vyruz.
Why: We’ve not heard of this particular genre of music before. But if it’s a product of this era and involves the word ‘afro’, you can be sure there’ll be a lot of white hipsters present.
3) Deacon Blue (Live)

What: Deacon Blue return to Australia for the first time in 30 years, fittingly to celebrate their 30th Anniversary, a tour which started in 2018 and has seen them play their biggest ever headline show in Glasgow to over 12,000 people. Deacon Blue are one of Scotland’s most famous and successful pop rock bands, from their million selling debut album ‘Raintown’ (with classic singles ‘Dignity’ & ‘Chocolate Girl’), and follow up, the chart topping ‘When The World Knows Your Name’ (featuring ‘Real Gone Kid’, ‘Queen of the New Year’ and ‘Fergus Sings the Blues’), through to 2016’s ‘Believers’, their highest charting album in 22 years, Deacon Blue are consistently one of the most respected and best loved bands of their generation.
Why: A generally unknown indie Scottish band is celebrating their 30th anniversary. We believe that’s the hipster music quadfecta.

What: Spilt Milk is a summer music festival, taking place within the tree-lined landscape of Victoria Park in Ballarat. This year’s lineup features the likes of Khalid and Chvrches, and will also feature sets by Juice WRLD, Golden Features, Tones & I, Dune Rats, Ocean Alley, G Flip, Illy, Allday and plenty more.
Why: This’ll likely be the last version of this festival that isn’t onomastically lactose-free.
