9) Artist Talk – Gabriel Jia: The Hidden Pilgrimage

What: Earlier this year photographer and civil engineer Gabriel Jia fulfilled a childhood dream to visit the Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches in Ethiopia. His debut solo exhibition, The Hidden Pilgrimage, shares his enchantment with an ancient place. Be privy to an intimate artist talk as Gabriel recounts his experience travelling to this remote place of worship and the realisation that with action it is possible to achieve ones dreams.
Why: He may be right. If you take the action of plugging your ears and slamming three tequila shots before this event, you’ll get all the credit of appearing cultured without having to listen to an engineer wax lyrical about his quasi-religious childhood fever dreams.

5) Craft Cubed Festival
18th-31st August
What: Now in its tenth year, the Craft Cubed Festival, a month-long, state-wide celebration of making, community and creative experimentation returns with a program embracing events, exhibitions and happenings from across the Victorian maker landscape. The theme of Crafting Culture invites the community to think about the ways in which the act of making connects and forges our cultural lives, be it across generations, across time, across geography. Expect both traditional and experimental interpretations of what it means to be involved in craft in 2019.

3) Ballarat International Foto Biennale
24th August-20th October
What: The Ballarat International Foto Biennale is one of Australia’s pre-eminent photographic festivals. Pprogram highlights include To the Moon and Back, in recognition of the Apollo moon landing 50 years ago, A History of Misogyny, Chapter One: On Abortion, a stark look at women’s reproductive rights, and Adi Nes’s homoerotic portraiture, which delves into questions of gender, masculinity and humanism.
Why: One of the few events that features the art of photography in which your data won’t be sold at a major profit. Though if you do decide to use Instagram while you’re there, that’s your prerogative.

2) Channels Festival: International Biennial of Video Art
24th August
What: The 2019 Channels Festival highlights Australian and international artists working across video and performance. The festival, curated by Kelli Alred, will present artworks that blur fact with fiction and deconstruct notions of belonging, complicity and resistance to challenge our understanding of difference, connectivity, power and place.
Why: We know. It reads like an HSC syllabus. But then again, wouldn’t it be a lovely thing to regress to that era when you could say ‘ugh, I just want to kill myself’, rather than, ‘I hope I can go to the movies without someone trying murder me’?
