10) Venture Café Sydney Launch Party

9) Share More Wear More Sydney Popup

What: Bring along 5 quality pieces you no longer regularly wear and are willing to let someone else enjoy (remember, you’ll get them back in 5 weeks). These might include last season’s winter coat, one of your many LBDs, or a bold print you’ve been photographed in one too many times. You can leave your daggy Christmas jumper at home though. Remember, some things aren’t meant to be shared.
Why: But some things are inevitably shared. Like contact dermatitis and B.O.
8) If a Butterfly Dies in the Forest Exhibition
21st February
What: In a time of rapid change on a global scale, Leonie Robison’s latest series of works, If a Butterfly Dies in the Forest…, confronts the effects of humanity’s development upon the environment and its inhabitants. Her largely abstract works focus on native Australian butterflies as a symbol for nature’s delicate beauty, conveying a sense of fragility.
Why: There’s no real need to go to this exhibition. Just walk outside your door, breathe in the air and see how much blood you cough up. Your own fragility is a far more impactful reminder of where we are environmentally.
7) Exhibition Launch: Uncertain Territory
21st February
What: Curated by 2018 Glover Prize winner Halinka Orszulok, Uncertain Territory is an exhibition that brings together the work of contemporary Australian artists who explore and confront environmental, political and cultural tensions in the landscape.
Why: It’s like twitter. But in terms of the visual, far fewer leaked nude pics.
6) Landscape Obscura Exhibition Opening
21st February
What: “Like the camera obscura of the 17th century, this exhibition is, in a way, a distortion. The work is about place, politics and the beauty of the land. It is a powerful and moving discussion in paint about ideas and mythology that locates us and acknowledges the importance of the collective history of this land.” – Ralph Hobbs.
Why: We have to admit it makes sense. To place the words beauty and politics in the same sentence without the use of the prefix anti- requires a Warholian level of distortion.
5) A Long Lunch with Gianmarco Antonuzzi of Le Coste
23rd February
What: 5 courses of food inspired by Gianmarco’s Lazio and his proximity to Rome. With each course you will be served 3 different wines which have been selected with Giorgio: Verticals of Vigne Piu Vecchie, Le Coste Rosso and Litrozzo. A Horizontal tasting of the 2014 vintage across the estates best white wines and a bracket will explore Aleatico in a dizzying array of styles (including the rare Unatantum!).
Why: Taste Rome without the rampant crime and cloistered pedophiles.
4) Twilight Fashion Market
22nd February
What: A pop-up fashion market for the style-obsessed to discover Central Coast’s growing independent designers, creative artists and collectors of preloved fashion.
Why: We’re not well affiliated with the style palate of the Central Coast. But we’re willing to bet what they lack in artistry they make up for in orange aviators and disdain for the colour black.

3) Brilliant Artists Film Series
23rd February
What: Manly Art Gallery & Museum Society, in partnership with filmmakers Bill Leimbach and Richard Mordaunt, present a series of special art films on the lives of four inspirational Australian artists. The screenings include introductions and Q&As with the filmmakers, providing unique insights into the film process and stories behind the artists.
Why: It’s like the recent Bohemian Rhapsody without glue on horse teeth, a sanitised sex life or Brian May’s ego.
2) Short+Sweet Theatre
17th February-31st March
What: The biggest little play festival will be returning once again with a smorgasbord of 10 minute plays to delight your tastebuds, with hundreds of talented actors, writers and directors showing off their skills and bringing you a wonderful season of short theatre.
Why: We know. The theatre. But it’s something you have to frequent at least on a biannual basis in order to maintain your intellectual superiority over your loved ones, and they’ve been so kind as to divvy it up into the most amount of time anyone can stand independent theatre without being offensively drunk.

1) Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras
16th February-2nd March
What: Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is one of Australia’s most famous and well-loved events, bringing thousands of visitors to Sydney to join in the celebrations. It captures the imagination of Australia’s LGBTQI and mainstream communities, taking over the city for weeks on end, culminating in the world-famous Parade: a colourful and dazzling night of pride, celebration and self-expression.
Why: Screw Scott Morrison. That’s why.
